Job Summary:
The mission of SUNY Upstate Medical University is to improve the
health of the communities we serve through education, biomedical
research, and health care. This goes beyond our downtown campus
with all our clinics and offices that provide patient care
throughout the greater Syracuse area. As we continue to grow, we
are happy to share that we are now working directly with the
Syracuse City School District to support the mental health needs of
the diverse student population and their families. In this new role
you will be asked to do the following:
Provide direct patient care to children, adolescents, and families
in the Syracuse City School District
Provide comprehensive care through assessment, psychotherapy with
individuals, families, and groups, and referral to outside
services
Assess the clinical needs of students, recommend, and coordination
of care with school and outside providers
Act as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes clinical
social workers, nurse practitioners, psychologists, and
trainees
Minimum Qualifications:
To be successful in this role the Psychologist is required to have
the following:
Ph.D. or Psy.D. and NYS license (or eligible) Psychologist
If currently unlicensed, a limited permit is required
License must be received within 1 year of employment
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the requirements there are preferred qualities that
will be helpful toward success:
5 or more years of school based mental health with no less than 4
doing psychological assessment
Experience in conducting comprehensive psychological assessment,
including neurodevelopment, with school-based population, including
BIPOC children and adolescence
Consulting with school about students who are presenting with
severe mental concerns
Demonstrated experience in working from a trauma-informed treatment
modality and trauma resolution and resiliency building practices as
well as strength-based treatment for children and families
Experience in exploring how racism, trauma, and social factors
impact mental health and how to use resources and skills to promote
healing and resilience
Experience in building community resiliency program including
training other providers
Demonstrated experience in providing direct psychotherapy to
individuals, families, and groups along with a strong ability to
conduct biopsychosocial assessments and formulate treatment
plans
Familiarity with community resources, effective referral processes,
and follow-up care with a deep understanding of child and
adolescent development and the social-emotional challenges
school-aged children face
Cultural competence is essential, ensuring the ability to engage
with and support diverse populations sensitively
Possess expertise in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and
de-escalation techniques to address emergencies and challenging
situations effectively
